As a note: verbal diarrhoea. words here follow thought, one paragraph not necessarily linked to the next.

When something is out of my control I get uneasy. Well, not exactly. I'm fine with letting people make all the decisions, but if I disagree I prefer to at least make a bit of noise about it.

Up until then, Hillary Challenge '07 was the biggest thing I have ever taken on in my life, in terms of how much I gave. I will honestly say that I went further during those three days than I ever thought I could. At times after that when I felt like giving up on things - after capping some billion times in a day, bashing through vegetation as tall as me, climbing that mountain with what felt like an elephant - I'd look back on those three days, and say, FSK THIS, I SURVIVED HC WITHOUT TRAINING, I CAN SURVIVE THIS. It gave me a confidence I never had before, the one great accomplishment I didn't think I'd get.

I will say that today, I was more nervous than I'd been in a long time. Even during my race during nats, I wasn't half as afraid as today, simply because I knew how much I had put in before will be how much I'd get that day. Training for that race, studying for bloody econs. There is fear, for a while, but when it comes to the starting line it's Screw being afraid, the time is now. Fear drives you forward, but too much of it drives you mad.

Back on topic, today. In that moment before they announced second, I swear my heart was stuttering. I suppose, in part, because of how much I wanted Raffles to place, and because I had had no say in this. I may have helped a (teeeny) bit in prepping them, but when it comes down to it its their race. Their fight. As a spectator, you can see how tired and drained they are, but it is so hard to know if it's enough. I hate that helpless feeling, the feeling that I have done nothing that could have affected this.

So yes, I was dead terrified. Suspense kills me.

Anyway.

Raffles Team 1 won second, by a 500 point margin. Team 2 placed first, by a some 80-odd points.

Keep in mind that second place had 2260 points, thereabouts. o_0

Team 1 was physically fitter, team 2 intended to be the happiest team around.

I can't say I'm happy with the results, simply because no matter which team won, the other would have lost. I'm bloody glad that both teams managed to place, and I'm ecstatic that team 2 won first, but when you look at team 1, who trained as hard as the other, you can't help but feel for them. I know what it's like to lose. They cried, just now. The atmosphere around them was awkward, to say the least.

Team 2 must be overjoyed. When we won, that year, after all the push-push-push and blisters and talcum powder, I cried. Though it is often said that winning isn't the most important thing, I don't think that HCS would have become as important a touchstone to me if I hadn't won it. If we had lost, I would have remembered it as the time I pushed myself, and still failed. It would have been a marker in my life, with the lesson being - pushing yourself doesn't get you anywhere. Because of that one success, I learnt to move past future failures.

Not exactly what these competitions want you to do, I guess. Most importantly, I don't want this to be the case for team 1. They've put in so much effort, especially over the past few days - training never ever gets you completely ready for the actual thing. Both teams wanted so badly to win, but only one can. It would be a fsking shame if the other team took this badly. I would have, I think.

In this, team 1, I hope you're not like me. Don't disregard this failure, but don't get hung up in it, either. Learn from it. Know that you will go on even after this. Pushing yourself doesn't always guarantee you success, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try. You may not have been first, but if you hadn't put yourself into this, you may not even have placed. If you do not try, you will die never knowing.

Maybe it's just me. I think this reflects a part of me - life goes on, relentlessly. Failure means you have to try again. It doesn't mean life ends here. No use stressing yourself over the answers you wrote an hour ago in the exam paper - you've handed it in, that's it. Study for the next paper.

I hate screwing up, I hate it so badly I'm scared to try because I fear I will fail. But if I never try, I'll never know if I could have succeeded. If you never jump, you'll never learn to fly.

Jump, not off a building, in the literal sense. Suicide is never an option. In killing yourself this way, you're giving up on life. Suicide is one thing I will never do. Life is short, the world is wondrous, and you're going to waste it by dying?

Sending in two teams, while providing a "second chance to win", means that even if you win, you lose. It's like playing chess against yourself.

On gay rights:

Well, gay as in homosexual.

I feel rather strongly about this subject: I feel gay rights are civil rights, that is to say, they are natural rights that should be available to all.

That's right, I'm a bad Christian. In fact, I don't even think I'm Christian anymore. Sadly, every time I think about the gay debate I actually want to distance myself from Christianity even more.

This came about because I was reading a debate on gay marriage (which eventually became a debate on homosexuality) on a forum (gtsplus.net).

It is unfair, I feel, to deprive homosexuals of the right to marriage. The United States Declaration of Independence, through which their Constitution is interpreted, states:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness."

The only time your rights are limited are when they infringe on another's: your right to liberty does not extend to to liberty to deprive another of their right to life, for instance.

To extend the liberty of marriage to homosexuals will not kill you, it will not decrease the extent your existing freedom. The only it may affect a homophobic is if you feel that you will be severely unhappy, but in making you happy you are depriving the homosexual from being happy.

In a way this comes down to a game of numbers. Many people (particularly in the self-proclaimed conservative society of Singapore) feel that homosexuality is unacceptable. Because more of these people exist than people who think otherwise, the law (created to protect the majority) is worded such that homosexuality is illegal.

Why is being gay wrong?

Because it is unnatural? What defines 'being natural'? According to Whitehead and Whitehead (1999), "Human behavior is determined by both nature and nurture. Without genes, you can't act in the environment at all. But without the environment your genes have nothing on which to act".

This implies that homosexuality is partially caused by genetic factors. Not much's known about this, so let's ignore this for the more common, and rather stupid argument.

"It's unnatural because we are meant to procreate. All nature means to live, procreate, and die. Homosexuals can't have children, therefore they are unnatural."

What, then, of homosexuality in animals? I'd actually call this bisexuality - these animals do procreate, but some spend an inordinate amount of time having sex for no particular reason. Also, sex really isn't all about procreation. A horny dog will hump anything, the nearest human leg, for example. Not just the males, either, a female dog in heat is just as likely to want sex. That doesn't mean she may want puppies. If it were all about the passing down of genes, you'd think that the damn dog would realize that you'd be a waste of energy, since nothing's going to result from humping your leg. Bonobos, commonly quoted alongside dolphins as being the only two animal species other than humans to have sex for fun (i.e., not to procreate, which is false), use sex as a means to decrease social tension felt by the group.

I'd say, first, that sex and love are two different issues. WRT homosexual marriages, the couples are (mostly,) in love with each other. They don't get married because it's a good way to get sex. Hell, whoever marries for that reason alone ought to be shot. So not worth it.

This is one counter to the whole "gay marriage will destroy the structure of a family unit".

One example of how opponents of gay marriage may argue this is shown here, a very extreme view, I'd think, but, surprisingly, still very common.

"The dual purpose of marriage is unitive and procreative. It provides a structure for raising children. The state cannot survive without the reproduction of the people. More importantly, the state will not be healthy without healthy citizens. And so, the family provides a most essential function for the state. A strong mother and a strong father equal a strong child, who will one day be a strong citizen. It is the recipe for good citizens.

The family is a unit. The mother, father, and child are inseparable. You take away one and the rest cease to exist. Think about this for a moment. It seems superficial but it is profound. A woman becomes a mom and a man becomes a dad when the child is conceived through the sexual act. They were transformed into dad and mom while co-creating a new life. The two became one flesh in sexual union and from that one flesh came forth three, each uniquely related to the others. And these three make one unit. This images the life of the Trinity. Mother, father, and child, three persons yet one family unit, a living reminder of God and a foundational unit of the state.

Two women can't make a child; two men can't make a child. Biologically, the female needs the male to reproduce. The child's conception should link male and female together like superglue, forever changing them. They become responsible for each other and the baby; and they become a new and unique productive unit in the state. The parents now exercise indispensable roles in the new family. Beyond the obvious biological differences, they influence the child in different ways. The woman/mother provides the potency of her femininity, while the man/father provides the potency of his masculinity. Neither is more important, they are both vital and dynamically complementary in influencing the development of the child."

To summarize, The state needs you to reproduce. To have a child that will be a Good Citizen, you must have a Good Mother and a Good Father. The family is a unit comprising of a Father, Mother and Child. Each is dependent on another: Father needs Mother and Mother needs Father to have a Child; without Parents there is no Child; without Child, Father and Mother are merely Man and Woman. The child glues its parents together; they become a "new and productive unit".

Also, it is said that if you condone the forming of family units with homosexual couples, the future generations will be negatively influenced - they may take on these homosexual attitudes and become homosexual themselves, or otherwise irrevocably corrupted.

This argument on the corruption of the young makes a particularly vile accusation: that homosexuality is some kind of a flaw, a disease, inherently evil. It's all in the wording, really.

To be honest, I'm repulsed that the marriage of a heterosexual couple that hates each other should be more socially acceptable than the marriage of a homosexual, loving couple. It seems even having a dysfunctional family (what, the sterotypical abusive father, druggie mother and flunkie child?) is preferable to having a gay-couple family.

"Marriage was never initially a religious ritual anyway. It was about land and alliances, and the religious folks came and added spiritual significance to the act. Now, that's not a bad thing in and of itself, but people marry for all different kinds of reasons. Some only do it for the legal benefits, some do it for love, some do it for their children, etc etc. Now two gay people getting married in a church may indeed be degrading to "Christian marriage", but in its most legal sense, outside of religious influence, it is not degrading at all.

And why would God have marriage only be between men and women? What's the reason for that exactly? If marriage was always about love, why not have it open to everyone? It would never be threaten by homosexual marriage, but the homosexual population, throughout the history of time, has always been a significantly lower percentage than the heterosexual population. Just because gays can marry doesn't mean that suddenly straight people everywhere are just gonna change instantly and get gay married. Sexuality simply doesn't work that way."

For example, if a parent tells his child to clean up his room and the child does not, he has rebelled. But, the parent is not responsible for the child’s sin, nor did he cause the child to sin. The child had a choice to obey or not to obey.

Likewise, God has created the condition in the world where the ability to rebel against Him was possible. Yet, he is not responsible for that rebellion once it has been committed. Therefore, sin originated with Lucifer who was the first to rebel and entered the world through Adam who likewise chose disobedience."

Taking the analogy of a parent and child: a child can choose not to clean his room, i.e., to rebel, yes. But what is the precedent for him to do so? If he has never rebelled before, why would he even consider it? How would he have known of the option to rebel? If a blind man has never before seen a flower, how can he knows what it looks like?

If God did not create sin, Man could not have known of sin, therefore could not have chosen to disobey God, simply because he do not know he can do otherwise.

If God created sin, then I personally think he is cruel, to condemn Man when he sins, send his Son down so that we are forgiven from it (making a big fuss of it), and, if you do not repent, doom you to hell and eternal suffering.

Can a Christian share their opinion on the origin of sin?

Oh, dude, I don't hate the RECAS thing, I just have this serious twitch-response everytime I see it because the header-image location (I don't display images I don't need to, deal with it) makes me think of various spam messages because I've honsetly never heard of that website before XD
And what with the recent surge in MSN/email spam+viruses - willy and lily (hoho, a rhyme) got hit by the MSN one and had their contacts cleared out.

And following the bunch of comments on the previous one (here I'll admit another thing - sometimes I don't read the entirety of comments I receive, partially because I'm usually too zonked; I'M SORRY FRIENDS), the previous, erroneous article was sent out as a joke? a mistake? Whatever it was, it wasn't the right one.

Hmm. There's the thing with the J1s that they said something about in their updated issue, but I can't recall it right now.

HLN was asking around for an old MP3 she could buy because her iPod Shuffle is losted, I realize I haven't had mobile music in a while, too, because I misplaced my earphones sometime during my grandma's wake. I don't have a working MP3 (I did, but my sister uses it, and it's pretty much hers, now), so that's it. You get a lot of random shizz done on the (bloody long 156-to-sengkang-and-change-to-27) bus trip home, though - I've been cubing again, doing KenKen (HKY won't see this, but I FINISHED YOUR BOOK) and sudoku, and er watching TVMobile. I like Just For Laughs, it cracks me up. And EinSteinchen is pretty interesting, for something that tries to compress physics concepts into 3 minute shorts.

..okay I just googled it (GOOGLE IS YOUR FRIEND), and apparently it's originally German, and only comprises 12 episodes. Pity.

I hope I see the Absolute and Relative one soon, I just found the German one on YTube but sadly I DON'T SPEAK GERMAN. Except Ich bin ein rote Apfel.

DUDE, I only saw the first few words and it looks like one of them Dubious Sites whose Mail You Should Delete Immediately Without Opening. Which is what I did, delete it. Another thing is that they, I realize, prepare it a little in advance, but don't check it before they send it, as in, run through it again right before they hit SEND. I got my latest 'issue', T2W9, at 22:40 - they might have sent it earlier, and it taken some time to get here, but I doubt it - this is an article they thing I should read:

Point here is, by the time they sent out their informative newsletter on how the war might be drawing to a close, the end in sight and all that, it already was over. NUBS.

More recently, just under 20 minutes after RECAS sent their journal, Reuters gives me a better article, which in the 20 minutes it has been up, has made it to the Most Popular list, which is the reason I saw it in the first place.

Alright, it's just that they didn't want to go to all the hassle of checking up all their shit, I guess. The articles are still decently interesting, I guess.

haha I was just thinking, the issue here is mostly the gender thing, because many view it to be morally wrong (there was this recent article which claimed it would damage the social fabric because kids will grow up with a distorted image of a family - would having two loving fathers be considered to be better or worse than having a violent, vulgar father/mother/both, I wonder?). So, if I go for a sex-change op (is that illegal here?), would I be considered to have changed my gender? If I married a male, would I then be considered a transsexual homosexual (since I'm now a man), or just a straight woman who wants to be a man?

Well, there are people out there who'd just call hypothetical-me a freak, I guess.

I feel like a terrible kid.

My dad obviously felt better today - he refused to talk to me the entire Sunday, and this morning, as well - and because he was decidedly less pissed, he actually went all the way to somewhere to get a non-pink LG phone discussed in a previous post.

Except that I'd already decided to bloody come up with the money for the SE C902, 902 902 COME ON NICOLE YOU CAN DO THIS, so it was like. somewhat of a disappointment.

And I feel like some ungrateful bitch because he's so obviously trying to make me happy and I fucking cried after he took out the LG box with phone, and not from happiness, either.

In all honesty I couldn't care less if it were pink or white or black, I hate the LG phone. But I can't tell him that haha.

I'll live with it, it's the least I can do.

Today was a down down down day, school trng home.

Chem SPA tmrw. Missing H3 for trng.

On the bright side, I'll have enough for my watch now. haha.

So passes the first week of two-oh-oh-nine.

Training has been a blast, barring the STOP GOING FORWARD GUYS NO NO SHIT THE K4 - ouch, very much - everything has gone swimmingly (ha, ha). Jiaolian never fails to command me off to paddle-carrying duty while the rest carry the K4, it is a HEIGHT THING, at which I am appropriately scandalized and the rest are excessively amused, and everyone laughs at me, including myself.

I can so reach the footrest.

I didn't mean to post a second time today, really. To those for which this is the only post on 040109, you're not on my friend's list. All my posts are friends-locked, only the impersonal ones (such as this) escape that net.

For the last time, there is a difference between jealousy and envy.

Jealousy, currently, is often used interchangeably with envy - OMG NEW IPOD I'M SO JEALOUS.

However, jealousy is fear, insecurity, anger, possessiveness when you feel an existing relationship [or a possession, if only to you] of yours is threatened by a rival - I am jealous of my freedom; My God is a jealous god.

Envy, on the other hand, implies you do not have that which you desire; you want something you do not possess. I am envious of your wealth; I envy you your innocence.

Zealousness (and not zealousy) is sometimes mixed up with jealousy. Religion: Jedi

..I would so totally do that, but I haven't exactly participated in any censuses, and I might get charged with, idk, contempt of court. Scary thing, y'know.

"Statistics Canada, the Canadian census statistics people, at first said refused to publish Jedi numbers claiming it was just a media driven stunt. Having the state fund the setting up these schools does seem rather biased, though - it appears that only the more 'conventional' and widely-accepted religions get this boon.

I think I'm agnostic. I had more to say, but LJ wiped it out when I accidentally refreshed the Edit Journal Entries page.

Growing up, the bible ranked about the same as my Primary Science Encyclopedia - pretty pictures, interesting information. It just seemed that the former was more well-known than the latter - but popularity doesn't make something True.

What the author of this post says resounds with me, and is a lot like what I feel, 'cept he can say it and I don't have the words to, so I'm borrowing his.

While googling for how dinosaurs fit into the bible and creation, I got this website, which, I'm sorry to say, reads like a load of ~~crock~~ propaganda. Unfortunately, it is also the First Hit google gets, which If you read the Dec 1 article, it suggests rather strongly that the idea of evolution (which, I actually partially agree, is rather a belief as well, just one substantiated with evidence as they present it) came about as a result of Darwin's rejecting of biblical views because his daughter died. Unable to reconcile the 'good' in death with God, he decided that evolution would be his substitute for God.

uh.

Back to dinosaurs,

"If dinosaurs evolved from amphibians, there should be, for example, fossil evidence of animals that are part dinosaur and part something else. However, there is no proof of this anywhere. In fact, if you go into any museum you will see fossils of dinosaurs that are 100% dinosaur, not something in between. There are no 25%, 50%, 75%, or even 99% dinosaurs—they are all 100% dinosaur!"

And therefore, dinosaurs did not evolve to be, they were created. Further on, they relate how dinosaurs did live alongside humans, and likely died out after the Flood - unable to cope with the post-flood world, having to compete with all the other pairs of animals etc (which reminds me, isn't everything then a huge inbreeding problem?)

I abandoned that article, it sounded like a mockery of Christianity, actually. I really don't know whether or not to take it seriously, i.e., whether or not to trust that the author sincerely believes what he is writing. Reading other articles reassures me somewhat that this is one (frankly ridiculous) article in a bunch of more convincing ones, so lah-dee-dah to that one.

There is another article, on the formation of the Grand Canyon - if the Earth is only about 6000 or so years old, the Canyon must have taken a relatively short time to for, and not the Millions Of Years scientists claim it did, yes? This one sounds far less fallacious and ridiculous, and brings up this example of the Burlingame Canyon, a "miniature Grand Canyon", 1 500 feet (450m) long, 120 feet (35m) deep and 120 feet wide. It was formed in a grand total of 6 days.

A counter-argument to this not-uncommon answer, found here, claims that the volume of the Grand Canyon is about 89 million times that of the Burlingame one, and so, "(just) because you can create a tiny canyon in six days doesn't prove anything, unless you can repeat it on the scale of the Grand Canyon. And, if the Grand Canyon eroded at the same rate as Burlingame, you would still need 1.5 million years for the Grand Canyon to form." The Grand Canyon does look like it could hold a damn lot more water than the Burlingame one, especially if you consider that if the Flood did happen, there'd be a hell lot more water flowing off the land into the sea/ wherever it went.

I have no clue about Grand Canyons, but I do think that the second website - Answers in Creation - has a point here:

So I was supposed to get the bag from javine ytd, but she asked if we could meet today, so I said yes, with this internal wince because it meant I had to postpone my piano lesson and this meant No SITEX which sucks because I really wanted to get new in-ear earphones even though I have nothing to plug them in to to listen, but something came up so she couldn't today either so she'll come by training ("I'll try to catch you before trng starts!") tmrw, and I really need to start packing for ALPs because I leave on Wednesday and there's about a million things I probably don't have because I haven't been going for ALPs sessions DD:

Sucks - was skating, and this guy kindof cut in front of me from nowhere - not really his fault, he didn't look very in control of himself - but so it resulted in me taking this bloody odd sprawl - not just the usual FLAIL-end-up-on-ass thing you more often see. I landed rather awkwardly, and my right wrist took quite a bit of the impact, so now I can't bend my wrist more than 45 degrees inward without feeling some sort of pain - which isn't the main problem -, but putting weight - push OR pull, or even resting - on it doesn't look so chipper either. On the bright side, at least it isn't so serious - it's not sprained, just strained, though for 10 minutes after I fell I couldn't really clench my fist properly, it was a a little numb and distant.

IT WILL BE BETTER BY TMRW LET'S GO GO GO >D

Typing/sms-ing one handed - I'm trying to Rest it - Rest Ice Compress Elevate Refer, I did learn something from First Aid Courses/ PE lectures, the Teachers should be proud - is troublesome.

I met shanin at the Rink, apparently she takes lessons, but her coach paused them for her to practice what she's learnt so far. Cool.

The Sister's gang decided to go for doughnuts and bowling after that, which means I Had To Go Too; they insisted I play, so I took up Left-Handed Bowling. It was, eh, okay, not terrible - 56. That's a little worse than when I bowl right-handed, so eh. Perhaps I should bowl left-handed from now on.

So anyway, I want to go bowling again. Pool-ing. IDK, mooching around outside.

The Island is a rather ADSFK;JGH sort of show, about clones being grown for organs+childbearing and they don't know they're clones and the World doesn't know the clones are conscious - they think clones are all kept in a permanently vegetative state until harvest. Today, nicole says, was a pretty good day, overall. See, class today was generally brainless and okay-to-understand, bar econs - I will never get that subject. CT and Cover CT are still Absent, thus Cover Cover CT Steffen has been taking attendance. huh.

Ah so it's been nearly three months since gv and I last went swimming in Macs; went in thrice today. gv only capped once?, and gab thrice, us ftw. The consolation is that it's only our second time in K1s. Once right at the (new! feet-burningly hot! wooden!) pontoon, once at the 500m mini pontoon trying to move away when all the Cs were trying to move in, and once trying to grab gab's boat so it wouldn't float away. All the weird stupid reasons.

A song that I've had for some time, decided to let those who've not heard it, well, hear it. It's a terribly sweet song, and srsly could make me cry. Only irritating thing about the Imeem one here is that around 3:00 is skips a few seconds of the song, which sort of ruins it. It's the only one I can embed here, though, since the youtube one sucks. Speaking of youtube, the MV for this song is ridiculous, because they sped it up to about 3:22, from 3:53. It's faster, but this song sounds better slow, I think.

The sort-of baddie from The Legend 太王四神记 (alternatively, according to wikipedia, The Story of the First King's Four Gods), the one from the 火天会 Fire Heaven Clan (subtitles are Funny, lol), is totally a Kakashi Ripoff. Silver hair (though it doesn't stand), eyepatch over the left eye, act-cool attitude, and a mask. I have amused The Family by exclaiming RIPOFF! everytime his face appears on the screen.

Also, until Friday, I had not known that the Prince-turned-King was playeed by Bae Yong-Joon. Rather like how, while aware that Secret starred Jay Chou, I only realized which character exactly he was, about 30 minutes in, after Quekers growled and commented on how he's mine, not <the female lead>'s.

I want Germany to win!
..otherwise Monday is going to be an absolutely miserable day.

On another note, in the past two weeks, I have ..obtained, you could say, approximately 1.2GB more of songs, which was about the size of one-quarter of my entire music collection prior to that. Because this is too :D to not talk about,
after 6 caps at the wonderful pontoon we all flounder (LIKE A FISH) our way back onto, gv and I made it out (we swear it is only because of jiaolian's magic touch) and round and round. The significance is that hurhur both our previous records for staying on the boat (with a batchmate!) out on the water are around er. 10s. Okay not really that's an exaggeration. Longer lah.

YEAH OKAY we were afloat long enough to actually focus on our strokes. Which by the way, we also only finally understood/got today. Prior to today it was generally the J2s telling us what not to do, and we'd still be all omg huh after that. Then today muddy told us what to do and it is like the cliche goes, EVERYTHING SLID INTO PLACE.
